with my mom by my side i took off early last sunday a.m. to search some flea markets and my usual haunts in southern New Hampshire.
since i wasn't bringing a truck, my focus was on vintage clothing and small decorative accessories for the shop.
driving the country road (they call it a highway) that connects keene to nashua, i happened upon one of my favorite stops - a rather large, junky antique center where i usually find interesting wicker porch furniture for the shop.
about 3/4's of the way through i started to think that we weren't going to be finding much that day. the place looked heavily picked-over, probably from all the tourists coming through for the season. it was about this time that i saw my mother frantically signaling me to come over to something she had found.
as i got closer, i saw she had a big smile on her face.
"you're not going to believe this" she said.
like a gift from the irish-knit heavens, there they were:
a giant collection of vintage hand-knit irish fisherman sweaters. all sizes and styles: pullovers, boat necks, cardigans, leather buttons, children's sweaters, men's sweaters, ladies' sweaters.
a pile of rich ivory wool LOVELINESS staring at me in the face.
well, needless to say, they were priced right and i took most all of them.
since that day, i have been on a mission, locally in new york, to add to this incredible collection.
yesterday, i got my usual email from nordstrom.
they were advertising handmade irish knit sweaters.
they were very nice but certainly not stunning like the ones i had been finding. THE REAL ONES.
and yes, nordstrom's are 10 times the price.
come grab some before i decide to keep them all for myself.
see you at the shop...
